Frequently Asked Questions
What is a 1:2 espresso ratio?
A 1:2 ratio means for every 1 gram of dry coffee, you extract 2 grams of liquid espresso. With an 18g dose, you target 36g of espresso. This is the standard specialty coffee ratio — balanced and complex.
What is a double espresso?
A double shot (doppio) uses approximately 14–18g of ground coffee and yields 28–36g of espresso. It is the standard size at most coffee shops. Single shots use around 7–9g of coffee.
How do I know if my espresso ratio is correct?
Taste it. A correctly extracted espresso should be sweet, balanced, and complex with no harsh bitterness. Under-extracted (too low yield) = sour and weak. Over-extracted (too high yield) = bitter and harsh.
Does grind size affect the brew ratio?
Grind size affects extraction speed, not directly the ratio. A finer grind slows extraction (better for ristretto-style), while coarser grinds speed up extraction (better for lungo). Adjust grind to hit your target time while maintaining your yield.
